Welcome

The Sustainable Vehicle Engineering Centre

The Sustainable Vehicle Engineering Centre (SVEC) is a unique platform for the whole of the automotive sector.

 Svec brochure cover

SVEC will provide:

  • market driven reports
  • consultancy
  • industry-led research
  • testing
  • knowledge transfer
  • education

The centre will deal with current and future challenge facing the whole life of the vehicle.

Current issues concern the disassembly, disposal and the recycling and reuse of materials in the current global vehicle parc.

With 60 million vehicles being scrapped to landfill annually and over 950 million vehicles on the roads of the world, future challenges revolve around the very sustainability of the automotive industry, with a focus on legislative drivers, forecasting, education, design and new technologies for future vehicles.

SVEC will investigate the materials, design issues and drivetrain concepts that will allow the development of low mass, low emission, economical vehicles that satisfy functional and safety requirements, whilst being amenable to disassembly and recovery of materials at end-of-life.

The new centre is located in the School of Technology at Oxford Brookes University in a multi-million pound building that was completed in 2006.

An overview of SVEC can be downloaded here.

Spring Workshop 2010

The Sustainable Vehicle Engineering Centre (SVEC) recently welcomed delegates at Oxford Brookes University to a Spring Workshop.  The workshop followed on from some of the themes highlighted as most relevant from the Whole Life Vehicle Conference 2009:

  • The future business models of the automotive industry
  • Consumer interfaces and intelligent transport
  • Advanced vehicle technologies.

Invited speakers were able to set the scene for each theme during the afternoon, after which the delegates were encouraged to question our panel of experts and to discuss amongst themselves the points raised.  Presentations given on the day can be accessed by clicking on the speaker's name below and entering the username and password when prompted.

We look forward to welcoming everyone interested in a sustainable automotive industry to our future workshops and events!
